The Taliban’s deputy spokesman said rescue operations continued today in areas affected by the recent earthquake. According to updated figures, the death toll in Kunar has risen to 2,205, while the number of injured has reached 3,640.
The 6-magnitude earthquake struck shortly before midnight on Sunday, hitting several provinces including Kunar, Nangarhar, Laghman, and Nuristan. Kunar was the hardest-hit province.
Taliban Deputy spokesman Hamdullah Fitrat wrote on his account on X that hundreds of bodies have been recovered from destroyed homes in Kunar’s Nurgal district, Mazar Dara, Chawkay’s Diwa Gul Dara, Chapa Dara, and Manogai districts.
“With the ongoing search and rescue operations, the number of martyrs has reached 2,205 and the injured 3,640,” he said.
