A powerful earthquake has struck eastern Afghanistan, devastating multiple districts in Kunar province. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid reported that the disaster has claimed the lives of 1,411 people, injured 3,124, and destroyed 5,412 homes in Kunar province.
The hardest-hit districts include Nurgal, Chawkay, Chapa Dara, Pech Dara, Watapur, and Asadabad, where entire villages have reportedly been flattened by the tremor. Rescue teams are struggling to reach remote mountainous areas, complicating relief efforts.
The quake, which occurred late Sunday night, has left communities in shock, with families searching for missing relatives amid widespread destruction. Local authorities say emergency response teams have been dispatched, but the scale of the disaster has overwhelmed available resources.
The Taliban government has called for urgent international aid to help victims of the earthquake.
Authorities warn that the casualty figures could rise further as rescue operations continue and remote villages are reached.
