The Afghanistan football team defeated India 2-1 in a crucial World Cup and Asian Cup qualifying match at the Indira Gandhi Football Stadium in Guwahati.

The Afghan football team, captained by Islamuddin Amiri, scored two goals. Rahmat Akbari scored the first goal in the 70th minute, followed by Sharif Mohammad.

The Afghanistan football team is striving to qualify for the 2026 World Cup and 2027 Asian Cup.

This is Afghanistan’s first victory in Group A, as last week, the team played a 0-0 draw against India. Afghanistan has two more matches in their group with Qatar and Kuwait.

Afghanistan has defeated the India team twice in football. India’s first loss was in the final of the 2013 South Asian Games, and both teams have played 13 matches so far.

In two consecutive games, Afghanistan unexpectedly changed its fortunes with a new coach Westwood, and secured important points from India in the second round of the World Cup and Asia Cup qualifiers.

Meanwhile, Qatar also secured a 2-1 victory over Kuwait. As a result, Afghanistan’s position in the group table changed. Qatar tops the group, followed by India in second place, Afghanistan in third and Kuwait in fourth.

Afghanistan has two games remaining, the fifth game will take place on June 6th, where the team will play against Qatar. The final game will be played on June 11th against Kuwait. Despite participating in various tournaments over the years, Afghanistan has never managed to reach the third round of the World Cup nor has it made its way to the Asian Cup.
